According to the Tagesspiegel, Aydan Özoguz, the SPD’s Vice President of the Bundestag, will not be a candidate for re-election to the position. Sources within the party suggest that Özoguz has lost internal support for a potential nomination in the new Bundestag. Despite being approached by the Tagesspiegel for a statement, Özoguz remained silent on the matter. She has held the position since 2021.
The SPD’s nomination for the Vice President position in the new Bundestag remains uncertain. Internal discussions are reportedly centered around Rolf Mützenich, the former faction leader and Nancy Faeser, the Federal Minister of the Interior. Saskia Esken, the SPD’s Co-Chair, is also being mentioned as a potential candidate.
The Tagesspiegel also reports that Julia Klöckner, the former Federal Minister of Agriculture, is likely to succeed Bärbel Bas, the current Bundestag President, on March 25, the day of the new Bundestag’s constitution. Bas has declined to run for the Vice President position.
