Ahead of the upcoming Bundestag debate on Germany’s migration policy, a Social Democratic Party (SPD) member of the German parliament, Kristian Klinck, has aligned himself with the Union’s demand for rejections at the borders. “An unauthorized border crossing by new arrivals does not fit into a humanitarian overall concept and should not be possible, unless the core of political asylum is affected” Klinck told the “New Osnabrück Times” (Wednesday edition).

Klinck, a member of the Bundestag for the electoral district of Plön-Neumünster, is calling for a tougher asylum policy from his party and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). “The SPD must change its policy” Klinck said. “I hope that my party has the strength to intervene more effectively in this area.”

Klinck believes that a limitation on the number of new arrivals is necessary, not only to better integrate the already present refugees, but also to demonstrate a sense of responsibility in addressing the issue of migration. “We must remain a strong community and invest heavily in the integration of the people who are already here. In this situation, it can be a sign of responsibility to limit further migration” he explained.

However, Klinck also criticizes the Union, particularly its leader and Chancellor candidate, Friedrich Merz (CDU), for considering collaborating with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) to pass the Union’s proposals for a tougher migration policy in the Bundestag. “A cooperation between the CDU and the AfD would be a taboo break” Klinck warned.

Klinck is running for re-election in the Bundestag election on February 23 in the electoral district of Plön-Neumünster and is currently ranked seventh on the SPD’s state list, making it uncertain whether he will be re-elected via the list.
