Otto Demands Mandatory Military Service with a Twist

In the midst of a renewed discussion on the topic of military conscription, Henning Otte, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, has called for the re-establishment of compulsory military service. Otte, in an interview with ARD’s “Tagesthemen” on Friday, stated that as the Parliamentary Commissioner, he would present the proposal again, “and that’s still this year”.

Otte also emphasized the need to better compensate military service, suggesting that this could include pension points. The Commissioner’s remarks come as the debate on military conscription has gained momentum, with the Defence Minister, Pistorius, recently stating that an additional 60,000 soldiers are needed. In response, Otte called on the Defence Minister to outline the measures that would be taken to achieve this goal.
