Order backlog in German manufacturing hits record high in March

Germany’s adjusted order backlog in the processing industry rose by 1.1 percent season- and calendar-adjusted in March 2025 compared to February. When compared to the same month in the previous year, March 2024, the backlog increased by 2.8 percent on a calendar-adjusted basis, according to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) on Monday. The growth in the order backlog is mainly due to the automotive industry (season- and calendar-adjusted +3.7 percent compared to the previous month). The increase in the rest of the vehicle manufacturing (aircraft, ships, trains, military vehicles; +0.8 percent) also had a positive impact. Domestic orders increased by 1.2 percent compared to February, while foreign orders increased by 1.1 percent. The order backlog for producers of intermediate goods increased by 0.5 percent and for capital goods by 1.4 percent. The order backlog for consumer goods producers decreased by 1.2 percent. The reach of the order backlog increased in March compared to the previous month to 7.8 months (February 2025: 7.7 months). For producers of capital goods, it increased to 10.6 months (February 2025: 10.5 months). For producers of intermediate goods, the reach remained unchanged at 4.3 months. For producers of consumer goods, it decreased to 3.6 months (February 2025: 3.7 months).
