Former German Parliament Defense Spokesperson, Eva Högl (SPD), laments the lack of women in the Bundeswehr and their ongoing disadvantage – sexual offenses are also occurring. “We have had women in all parts of the Bundeswehr for over 20 years” said Högl to the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland.” “However, the Bundeswehr misses the goal of 20 percent women in the military forces set in the Soldier and Soldier Equality Act.” There is still a shortage of suitable uniforms and sufficient sanitary facilities. “And unfortunately, there are also sexual offenses in the Bundeswehr” said Högl. The percentage of women is still at 13 percent – and this only if the roughly 50 percent women’s share in the medical service is included. “Otherwise, it’s only nine percent. And there are still far too few women in leadership positions” criticized Högl. She demanded that women should be actively recruited. Högls five-year term expires on May 25th.
