Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has expressed hope that U.S. President Donald Trump will take more decisive action regarding Israel and clearly articulate his expectations. In an interview with the German newspaper “Tagesspiegel”, Olmert stated he anticipates Trump’s patience with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will wane.
Olmert believes the U.S. President possesses the authority to influence Netanyahu’s policies. He suggested Trump should summon Netanyahu to Washington again and directly convey a message: “Bibi, enough. Stop immediately.
Following Israel’s reported successes against Hamas leadership and strategic infrastructure, Olmert dismissed claims that the Gaza Strip poses an existential threat to the State of Israel as “absurd”. He asserted that the majority of the Israeli public is no longer supportive of the ongoing conflict.
“The war now serves only the political needs of Prime Minister Netanyahu” Olmert stated. He characterized Israel’s actions in Gaza as having become “a political private war” describing it as “a crime”.
