The chairman of the Greens in North Rhine-Westphalia, Yazgülü Zeybek, sharply criticizes the recent demands of Union’s chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz on migration policy.

Merz is using “populist election rhetoric to fuel the remigration fantasies of the AfD” Zeybek said to Ippen-Media. Merz had said that the double citizenship should be limited to justified exceptional cases in the future, and that additional problems would arise otherwise. He also proposed revoking the German citizenship of people who have committed crimes.

“The demand by Friedrich Merz is a political madness in integration” said the Green politician Zeybek. “I myself, like millions of other people in Germany, have double citizenship. Friedrich Merz wants to make these people, who live and work here, second-class citizens, citizens on probation.” This would lead to great uncertainty for many. “Will their German passport be taken away from them if they commit a traffic offense? Black driving is, after all, a crime” Zeybek said. This cannot be the serious answer of the CDU’s chancellor candidate to the migration policy challenges of our time, Zeybek said.
