North Rhine-Westphalia's Olympic Bid Set to Make a Splash?

Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia Unveils Concept for 2028 Olympics and Paralympics at the Rhine and Ruhr

North Rhine-Westphalia’s Minister-President Hendrik Wüst, accompanied by the leaders of the participating cities, presented the concept for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics at the Rhine and Ruhr to the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) on Wednesday. The plan is expected to be officially submitted by the end of May.

Many cities in the region have already passed resolutions in support of the bid, but with the condition of financial support and public involvement. “North Rhine-Westphalia is ready for the games at the Rhine and Ruhr” Wüst said, highlighting the exceptional aspect of the event, which could offer around ten million tickets for the competitions, the most in the history of the games.

The concept is also sustainable, as around 95% of the necessary sports facilities already exist or would only need temporary adjustments. The enthusiasm of the population for major sporting events is another plus point for the bid.

Ultimately, the German DOSB will decide which German candidate will be selected for the international selection process of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the 2028 Olympics and Paralympics. In addition to North Rhine-Westphalia, there is also interest from Munich, Hamburg and Berlin. The final decision on the concept is expected to be made in September 2026.
