A dramatic and rain-affected British Grand Prix at Silverstone resulted in a McLaren one-two finish, with Lando Norris securing victory. His teammate, Oscar Piastri, crossed the finish line in second place, while Nico Hülkenberg of Sauber completed a sensational podium – marking his first in a long and distinguished Formula 1 career.
The race began with all drivers utilizing intermediate tires due to the wet track conditions. However, a strategic gamble saw several drivers in the lower positions quickly pit for slick tires after the reconnaissance lap. Piastri, starting from pole position, swiftly overtook defending champion Max Verstappen at the race’s outset.
The intensity of the rain increased from the eleventh lap, prompting the deployment of the safety car. A subsequent crash involving Isack Hadjar shortly after the race resumed resulted in another safety car period, bunching up the field. Lance Stroll and Nico Hülkenberg notably benefited from this reshuffling, elevating to fourth and fifth positions respectively.
A significant shakeup occurred during the second restart. Piastri momentarily appeared to halt just before the race was released, then surged forward. Verstappen, attempting to respond, lost traction and dropped ten places as a result. Piastri received a ten-second post-race penalty for the maneuver. Stroll and Hülkenberg then battled for the third spot, with the German ultimately gaining the upper hand.
The remainder of the top ten finishers included Verstappen, Pierre Gasly (Alpine), Stroll and Alex Albon (Williams). Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin) secured two championship points in ninth place, while George Russell (Mercedes) finished tenth, earning a single point. The next race is scheduled to take place in three weeks at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium.
