Former SPD Chief Martin Schulz to Forge Strong Alliance in Europe Against Trump’s Politics

Martin Schulz, the former head of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, has expressed his intention to bring together a strong alliance in Europe against the policies of US President Donald Trump. “The overwhelming majority of people in Europe do not want Trumpism” he told Politico in an interview.

Schulz acknowledged that there are strong parties in Europe that support Trump, but emphasized that the majority of the population is against his policies. He cited Austria as an example, where a small party with around 30% support is in opposition to the views of the majority, who are strongly against Trump’s line.

In the context of the recent visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to French President Emmanuel Macron, Schulz called for a closer partnership between the two countries. “These two states represent 50% of the economic power of the Eurozone. If Germany and France can present a united front, a lot can be gained” he said.

Schulz praised Scholz’s political stance, saying that it is exemplary in its clarity, not only in relation to Trump, but also in relation to Putin and Ukraine. He also criticized CDU/CSU candidate Friedrich Merz, saying that his handwritten letters with uncertain content are not what is expected of a German chancellor. “I expect more from a German chancellor than hand-written letters with uncertain content” Schulz said, contrasting Merz’s approach with Scholz’s clear stance.
