Berlin, March 24, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized the significance of supporting Ukraine during the European Council meeting in Brussels.

According to the Chancellor, the central concern is for Ukraine to remain an independent, sovereign and democratic nation and to continue its path towards the European Union. Scholz also stated that Ukraine should maintain a strong military after a potential peace agreement is reached.

The Chancellor mentioned that a ceasefire should be based on the proposals of Ukrainian President Selenskyj and he referred to the constitutional amendment on the defense budget, which enables the necessary military aid to be financed for Ukraine.

Furthermore, Scholz criticized the detention of Istanbul’s Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu as a very bad sign for democracy and he called for the opposition not to be put on trial.
