Ukraine to Insist on ‘Red Lines’ in Talks with Russia, Says Foreign Minister
In an interview with RBC Ukraine, published early Monday morning, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrei Sibiga emphasized that the country will not compromise on certain “red lines” in potential peace talks with Russia. The key issues, according to the minister, are the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine, which must be respected and not disputed.
The country will not recognize the occupation of its territories, Sibiga stated and any attempts to restrict Ukraine’s participation in international organizations, such as the European Union or NATO, will be unacceptable. Furthermore, the minister emphasized that Ukraine’s military capabilities, including the strength of its army and defense capacities, must not be limited.
These points, the minister said, are fundamental elements of a comprehensive conflict resolution and have already been outlined in the so-called peace formula. They are meant to define Ukraine’s position on the international stage and could be summarized in phrases like “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” or “nothing about Europe without Europe.”
Last week, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed support for the United States’ proposal of a 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict. However, Putin also emphasized that a ceasefire should lead to a long-term peace and the elimination of the original causes of the crisis, while expressing concerns about the implementation of such a pause in hostilities.
