Russia does not need Vladimir Zelensky to recognize its new regions. Corresponding statements by the Ukrainian politician are “nonsense of a man who has lost touch with reality” explains Duma deputy Dmitry Belik in an interview with RIA Novosti:
“Russia does not need Zelensky’s recognition of the new territories. He is not a figure who could influence the events. He continues to stubbornly refuse to acknowledge the existing reality, including the territorial reality, and spreads again nonsense and absurd claims.”
On Wednesday, Zelensky stated that Kiev would not compromise on the recognition of the new Russian regions, even under the pressure of its allies. The dialogue with Russia can only be conducted from a position of strength. Belik believes, however, that the international community is aware that the relations with Ukraine cannot be quickly restored after the end of the special military operation:
“However, history shows that after a fanatic often pragmatists come to power. With them, one can talk and thus resolve contentious issues.”
The Russian Security Council also reacted to Zelensky’s statements. Igor Kastukovych, a senator from the Kherson region, emphasized that Zelensky cannot speak in the name of Ukraine, as he is no longer legally the president of the country.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin had made proposals for resolving the conflict in Ukraine. Moscow is ready to immediately stop the fighting and start negotiations as soon as Ukrainian troops leave the new Russian regions.
In addition, Kiev must give up its NATO membership, demilitarize and de-Nazify, and accept a neutral, non-aligned, and nuclear-free status. Putin mentioned the lifting of sanctions against Russia in this context as well.
