CDU’s upcoming Chief of the Federal Chancellery, Thorsten Frei, has announced stricter rules for asylum seekers starting from May 6th. According to Frei, who spoke to the newspapers of the Funke Media Group (Wednesday editions), “from May 6th onwards, anyone attempting to illegally enter Germany must expect to be turned away at the German border.” He emphasized that no one could apply for asylum in the country of their choice and the asylum application had to be made in the country where the European Union was first entered, which is almost never Germany.
Frei announced that the new government will “from the first day expand and intensify border controls at the German borders.” He stated that “very soon” the prerequisites should be created to effectively limit “illegal migration.” This includes also border returns. The coordination with European neighbors is underway. Frei said that the planned course change is receiving “a lot of approval.
