No Family Seats Return Planned

The incoming CEO of Deutsche Bahn, Evelyn Palla, has confirmed that the recent elimination of family seat reservations will not be reversed. Responding to inquiries from the dts news agency on Monday in Berlin, she stated that reinstating the program is “currently not planned.

Addressing questions about whether the company would become more family-oriented under her leadership, Palla asserted that Deutsche Bahn already offers a relatively “family-friendly” offering. She pointed to comparative pricing analysis, particularly in long-distance travel, as supporting evidence. The family seat reservation system, which allowed up to five people to secure fixed seating for a flat fee of €10.40, was discontinued earlier this year, requiring children to also pay for seat reservations.

During her formal introduction on Monday, Palla emphasized that quality would become a top priority under her direction, declaring it a “matter for the management”. She stated that passenger satisfaction would be paramount and that a renewed quality culture was vital for the DB Group, committing to its creation. She underscored that the railway infrastructure remains the foundational element. Without a strong, efficient and functioning rail network, she argued, all other aspects of the railway system are diminished, reiterating that infrastructure rehabilitation will remain a primary focus.

Palla affirmed the company’s commitment to the ongoing program of comprehensive infrastructure modernization. “Only when routes and stations are in top condition can train operations truly shine” she said. However, she cautioned against expectations of swift and dramatic improvements. Recognizing the extensive work required, Palla described infrastructure rehabilitation as a “marathon” indicating a long-term commitment to steady and sustained progress.
