No Deal Without Climate Action!

In a recent interview with the German news portal T-Online, Katharina Dröge, the leader of the Green Party’s parliamentary group, expressed her party’s reluctance to form a coalition with the Union, led by Friedrich Merz, unless certain conditions are met. Dröge emphasized that the Greens cannot support a plan that involves closing Germany’s borders, describing it as “destructive for Europe.”

She also stated that the party would not participate in a coalition that involves a breach of European law and that they expect all parties to rule out the possibility of seeking an alternative majority with the far-right AfD. Dröge mentioned that there are a range of criteria for a coalition, including “further steps in the fight against climate change” and that the final decision will not be based on a single demand.

Dröge reiterated that a coalition with the Union is still not on the table, citing the Union’s recent cooperation with the AfD in the Bundestag. She criticized Merz, saying that she does not believe his assurances that he will not work with the AfD, citing his previous broken promises. Dröge described Merz’s leadership style as “erratic and impulsive” and warned that such a approach is not suitable for the country.

The Greens have ruled out supporting a minority government led by Merz, with Dröge stating that the possibility of Merz seeking a coalition with the AfD in the future makes it impossible for the Greens to support him.
