No Deal with the Devil - Union is Off the Table

Ahead of the Green Party’s convention in Berlin on Sunday, the party’s youth leader, Jette Nietzard, has expressed her opposition to a coalition with the Union after the federal election.

“It’s unthinkable, just like Friedrich Merz and Markus Söder’s stance, that would make a black-green coalition impossible”she told the Watson news portal. “Neither for young people nor for the Greens would such a coalition be a good idea. In my opinion, a good opposition is highly valued in a democracy.”

According to Nietzard, four key words are crucial for young people in Germany: “rent, debt brake, climate crisis and right-wing shift.”She criticized the current state of affairs, stating, “No one will re-elect a governing party if the rents are still as high in four years as they are now.”She also indirectly criticized Robert Habeck, saying, “Regardless of how often Friedrich Merz, Olaf Scholz and sometimes Robert Habeck talk about deportation flights, it doesn’t change the real problems.”

Nietzard, alongside Jakob Blasel, has been the Green Youth’s federal leader since October. It is expected that the youth organization will criticize parts of Robert Habeck’s election program at the convention on Sunday. Nietzard said to Watson, “The Green Youth is the party’s left wing. For us, that means we need to better organize ourselves and we will achieve that.
