The Left Party is calling for free and healthy meals to be provided to all schoolchildren nationwide. According to the party’s leader, Ines Schwerdtner, the debate about the amount of meat in school lunches is a futile cultural battle waged by the Union and serves to distract from the real issue at hand: many parents can no longer afford school lunches. In Saxony, for example, a school lunch can cost up to seven euros.
In order to ensure that no child goes hungry while at school, The Left Party is calling for free lunches for all schoolchildren. They are urging both state and federal levels to implement this policy, even resorting to initiatives such as those seen in Brandenburg. Children learn how to maintain a healthy diet while at school and therefore it is important that their meals consist of plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. The party is calling for school kitchens to adhere to the recommendations of the German Society for Nutrition, rather than the guidelines of a local meat supplier.
