No ‘Break’ with the US, but a Stronger EU Ahead?

No 'Break' with the US, but a Stronger EU Ahead?

A top SPD official, Lars Klingbeil, has expressed his views on the recent disagreement between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump at the White House. Klingbeil described the event as “a wake-up call”, but emphasized that the SPD does not intend to break with the Americans.

He stated that the idea of the country becoming independent from the US is not a viable option and instead, he would like to see deeper cooperation and a stronger Europe. The SPD leader believes that Germany, France and Poland should take the lead in strengthening the European Union’s decision-making capabilities.

Klingbeil also welcomed the United Kingdom’s recent involvement in European affairs, seeing it as a positive development. He views the biggest political task of his generation as “bringing Europe out of Sunday speeches” and making it a more effective and cohesive entity.
