German Politician Assures Neutrality in Party’s Foreign Policy Manifest
In a recent statement, the Minister-President of Rhineland-Palatinate, Alexander Schweitzer, has downplayed the notion that the “Manifest” for a new foreign policy, penned by SPD members, constitutes an attack on the party’s leadership.
Schweitzer, a member of the SPD, emphasized that he reads the document not as a critique of the federal government or the party’s top leadership. He believes that within the party, there is a natural space for diverse opinions, particularly when it comes to discussions on war and peace.
The authors of the foundational paper warn of the consequences of massive rearmament and advocate for a rapprochement with Russia. Schweitzer, however, believes that a balanced approach is necessary, combining peace initiatives with military efforts to maintain a strong negotiating position and ensure that Putin is aware that neither Germany nor Europe can be intimidated or divided.
While differing opinions on the path to peace are acceptable, Schweitzer believes that the goal of achieving a peaceful resolution is shared among all.
