Next German Parliament in the Firing Line?

German politicians from the Green and CDU parties have expressed differing opinions on the possibility of a constitutional review of the far-right AfD party. Irene Mihalic, the parliamentary group leader of the Greens, believes that the AfD’s actions are a threat to the constitutional order and that a review of the party’s constitutionality is necessary. She stated that the AfD’s deportation plans and the violent rhetoric of some of its politicians are a reminder of the darkest periods in German history.

On the other hand, Roderich Kiesewetter, a security expert from the CDU party, has filed an application for a constitutional review of the AfD, citing the responsibility of each member of the Bundestag to defend the free democratic order. He believes that the review is necessary to ensure the AfD’s constitutionality, but does not think that the Bundestag should take a decision on the matter before the upcoming elections.

Mihalic, however, believes that the debate on the AfD’s constitutionality is important, even if a decision is unlikely to be made before the elections. She thinks that the debate will continue in the next Bundestag and that it is necessary for the democratic parties to make it clear that they will defend parliamentary democracy against its enemies.

Experts believe that it is now unlikely that the Bundestag will make a decision on the AfD’s constitutionality before the elections, given the shortened legislative period. However, the debate has already taken place, and the parties have made their positions clear.
