The US government has announced the launch of a new missile defense system, named “Iron Dome for America” aimed at protecting the country from various threats, including ballistic missiles, hypersonic and cruise missiles and other advanced weapons. According to the administration, the initiative is a response to the increasing complexity and intensity of these threats over the past 40 years.
The new defense system is intended to provide a shield of protection for American citizens and critical infrastructure, with the aim of promoting peace through strength. The plan, to be submitted to the President within 60 days, will be developed by the new Defense Minister, Pete Hegseth.
The project will involve the development of sensors in space, the deployment of space-based interceptors and the establishment of air defense capabilities both before and during the launch phase of missiles. The plan also includes the development of a supply chain to support the necessary components.
The concept of Iron Dome was first announced by the President in January 2025, with a promise that the system’s components would be domestically produced and that national defense would be a top priority for the administration. Iron Dome is a type of system developed in Israel, designed to intercept short-range rockets, artillery and mortar shells, with a reported success rate of up to 90%.
