New Federal Government Plans to Eliminate 26 Government Delegate and Coordinator Positions

The new German federal government plans to abolish more than two dozen government and ministerial officials in its first meeting on Tuesday. This is according to a draft resolution reported by the Politico news magazine.

Following the election of Friedrich Merz (CDU) on Tuesday, a cabinet meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Afterwards, there will be a joint dinner of the new cabinet at the Chancellery. According to the draft, the new government intends to do without 26 officials, special representatives and coordinators.

Among those to be abolished are the special representative for international climate policy and the special commissioner for migration agreements. The officials responsible for goods transportation and logistics, rail traffic, Western Balkan countries, air and space travel and information technology are also to be abolished. The new federal government will no longer have a commissioner for the oceans either.

In the Foreign Office, the positions of the ambassador for feminist foreign policy and the representative for human rights and global health are to be removed. In the Ministry of Defense, there will no longer be a commissioner for the planning of the timespan. In the future, officials, special representatives and coordinators should only be appointed by “cabinet decision or organizational decree of the Federal Chancellor” unless the relevant function is prescribed by law.
