The Netherlands is set to ban private fireworks displays for New Year’s Eve celebrations starting in 2026/2027, a move that is generating considerable discussion within Germany. A recent survey conducted by Forsa indicates that a majority of Germans support a similar ban within their own country.
According to the Forsa poll, commissioned by “Stern” magazine, 59% of respondents favor prohibiting private fireworks. Conversely, 39% oppose such a restriction, while 2% expressed no opinion. The survey reveals a noticeable gender divide, with women significantly more likely (67%) to support a ban compared to men (51%). While men generally lean towards supporting a ban, younger men aged 18 to 29 show a more divided sentiment, with 51% opposing a ban and 48% in favor.
Political affiliation also plays a key role in shaping opinions on the issue. Supporters of the Left party demonstrate the strongest endorsement of a fireworks ban at 86%, while voters of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) stand as the only group overwhelmingly against it (60%).
The data was collected through telephone interviews conducted by the market and opinion research institute Forsa for “Stern” and RTL Deutschland on July 3rd and 4th, based on a sample of 1,000 participants.
