As the night of Friday unfolded, a sudden explosion occurred on the roof of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, which was previously shielded by a sarcophagus, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The agency reported that a drone had allegedly struck the roof of the facility, prompting a swift response from firefighters and their equipment.
As of the current moment, there are no signs of a breach of the internal containment system and radiation levels inside and outside the building remain “normal and stable”. Ukraine, meanwhile, has attributed the incident to a Russian drone.
The recent events in Chernobyl and the escalating military activities in the vicinity of the Saporischschja nuclear power plant have underscored the ongoing risks to nuclear safety, said IAEA Chief Rafael Grossi. “There is no room for complacency and the IAEA remains in a state of high alert.
