Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party. The announcement, made on his platform X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, follows an online poll initiated the previous day – deliberately timed to coincide with the United States’ Independence Day. According to official results from the poll, approximately 1.2 million votes were cast, with 65% of respondents favoring the creation of an “America Party.
Musk justified his decision, stating that the nation’s trajectory towards financial instability, attributed to perceived governmental waste and corruption, effectively renders the current political system a de facto one-party state rather than a true democracy. He declared the America Party established “today” with the stated goal of “returning your freedom.
Referencing the ancient Greek general Epaminondas, known for unexpectedly defeating Spartan forces at the Battle of Leuctra, Musk characterized the party’s strategy as a means of challenging the existing political establishment. He suggested a focused and strategic approach to disrupt the current system, drawing parallels to Epaminondas’s tactical maneuver.
The move comes after a recent shift in Musk’s political alignment. He had previously been a vocal supporter of former U.S. President Donald Trump for several months, including during the previous election campaign. The relationship reportedly fractured following disagreements surrounding the recent passage of the “Big Beautiful Bill” a U.S. spending package that includes a significant increase in national debt. Trump formally enacted the spending bill on Independence Day.
