Murder in the Halls of Power

In Tehran, two leading judges were shot dead in the early morning near the building of the Supreme Court on Wednesday. Another justice official was injured in the attack, with the assailant reportedly taking his own life after the assault.

The Press Office of the Justice Ministry issued a statement on the incident, saying:

“Today, a armed intruder committed a premeditated attack on two prominent and experienced judges, who are known for their fight against crimes against national security, espionage, and terrorism.”

Preliminary investigations, according to media reports, have shown that the attacker “had no case at the Supreme Court and was not a visitor to one of its branches”.

After the attack, the court’s security personnel attempted to apprehend the gunman, who, however, managed to evade arrest by taking his own life.

Iranian media reported that one of the victims was previously the target of a terrorist attack in 1998, which he survived with light injuries.
