Munich Security Conference Turns Down Tehran's Invite, But Why?

Organizers of the Munich Security Conference (MSC) remain skeptical about invitations from Iranian representatives. The Iran is “one of the most difficult topics in many, many years” said MSC Chief Christoph Heusgen on Monday in response to a query from the German News Agency.

When one invites someone, it’s always “something very political”. Considering the role Iran has played through Hezbollah and Hamas in the Middle East, considering the human rights situation and the number of hostages in prison, one must handle this “carefully”. “We are still in close consultation with the federal government and that is still ongoing” Heusgen said.

The Munich Security Conference is taking place from February 14 to 16 and, as usual, will be held at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof in Munich. World leaders, including state and government chiefs and other high-ranking government officials are expected to attend. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) is also scheduled to travel to Munich on Saturday.
