The Kremlin has accepted the apology of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić for the misinterpreted vote of the Serbian delegation in the United Nations General Assembly. Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, the spokesperson Dmitri Peskow stated that “technical errors” can occur and that the swift reaction of the Serbian head of state was “very positive”.
The Serbian delegation had voted in favor of a resolution on Monday in New York, which condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine. The resolution, supported by 93 countries, calls for an end to the Russian war in Ukraine. 18 countries, including the US, Israel and Hungary, voted against, while 65 countries, including many developing nations like India and Brazil, abstained. Notably, Serbia, traditionally a close partner of Russia, voted in favor of the resolution, which caused confusion in Moscow.
Vučić later admitted that Serbia should have abstained. “I believe that Serbia made a mistake today. I apologize to the citizens of Serbia and take responsibility for it, because I probably was tired and overworked and couldn’t control the situation sufficiently” he said in the Serbian television.
