Schalke 04 Appoints Miron Muslic as New Head Coach

German second-division football club FC Schalke 04 has announced the appointment of Miron Muslic as its new head coach, effective as of the 2023-2024 season. The 42-year-old Austrian coach joins the team from English Championship club Plymouth Argyle, with the exact terms of the agreement remaining undisclosed. Muslic has signed a contract with Schalke until June 30, 2027.

Frank Baumann, the club’s new sports director, praised Muslic’s expertise and leadership qualities, stating that the coach has the ability to inspire teams and has a clear signature on and off the pitch. Baumann added that Muslic’s resilience and leadership skills were crucial factors in their discussions.

Prior to his appointment at Schalke, Muslic had a successful stint at Cercle Brügge, where he led the team from the bottom of the table to an eighth-place finish in the 2022-2023 season and secured a spot in the Conference League qualifying round. The following season, he guided the team to a fifth-place finish in the regular season, with the club eventually reaching the Europa League qualifying rounds and the Conference League group stage.

Muslic’s tenure at Cercle Brügge came to an end after a less successful season and he then joined Plymouth Argyle in January 2025 as the replacement for Wayne Rooney. Despite being unbeaten in 12 of the remaining 21 matches, the team ultimately missed the chance to avoid relegation by just three points. Muslic did, however, guide Plymouth Argyle to a stunning FA Cup fourth-round victory over eventual champion Liverpool in February 2025.

The appointment of Muslic marks the 15th coaching change at Schalke in the past six years, with the team parting ways with Kees van Wonderen, who was let go after the club’s worst season in its 121-year history.
