Interior Minister Georg Maier of Thuringia, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), has expressed criticism towards his coalition partners following the special video conference of the Interior Ministers’ Conference. “The Union was very rigid on the issue of migration, with the motto: ‘Either we adopt their proposals now, or there will be no agreement.’ This goes against the spirit of the Interior Ministers’ Conference”he told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”(Tuesday editions).
Although the ministers did reach an agreement on better coordination of authorities and increased monitoring of mentally ill criminals, Maier emphasized that “the rejection of all asylum seekers at the borders is extremely questionable from a European and constitutional law perspective.””That’s why we won’t do it”he added, indicating that the SPD will not support such a policy.
