Minister Urges Gaza Ceasefire Now

German Development Minister Reem Alabali-Radovan has voiced a desire for increased German involvement in efforts to secure a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. In an interview with the “Rheinische Post” she described the ongoing situation in Gaza as “unfathomable” citing the deaths of innocent children and widespread hunger among the civilian population.

Speaking after a recent visit to the region, Minister Alabali-Radovan emphasized the urgent need for an immediate and sustainable ceasefire, not a delayed one. She expressed understanding for the demands articulated in a joint letter from 29 nations addressed to the Israeli government. This letter, signed by countries including the United Kingdom, France and Italy, called for an immediate end to the conflict.

The Minister underscored the critical need to protect the civilian population in Gaza, highlighting the dire need for access to essential resources like water, food, medical care and safety. She strongly urged the Israeli government to adhere to international law, permit unobstructed humanitarian aid deliveries, establish safe humanitarian corridors and allow unrestricted access for the United Nations and humanitarian organizations.

Alabali-Radovan stressed that the protection of civilians, particularly children, must be the highest priority. She warned against international inaction and reiterated the responsibility of the global community, including Europe, to do everything possible to end the violence and save lives. She cautioned that the current trajectory is unsustainable and requires immediate intervention.
