A German minister-president, Daniel Günther of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has expressed his intention to reform the debt brake in the next legislative period, but not before the upcoming federal elections. According to Günther, a majority in the next German Bundestag can make such a decision and he believes there is a need for more discussion on the topic.
Günther also mentioned that, in order to pass a constitutional amendment, votes from the Left Party would be necessary and he acknowledged that the outcome of the election cannot be influenced.
In addition to the debt brake reform, Günther also plans to introduce a new special fund for defense, which he believes should be prioritized over using the funds for climate protection or infrastructure. According to Günther, the most pressing matter is the defense capability of the country.
