German Interior Minister Daniela Behrens has called for the immediate deportation of criminals and potential threats from Afghanistan and Syria.
German states’ interior ministers have, in a bipartisan agreement, expressed the expectation that the Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry of the Interior will quickly arrange more flights for the deportation of serious offenders and threats to Afghanistan, said Behrens. This also applies to the resumption of deportations to Syria.
The Lower Saxony Interior Minister criticized the former Federal Interior Minister, saying that the former had pretended to be held back by the SPD, but this was not the case, as is now evident under the CSU Minister Dobrindt at the Federal Ministry of the Interior.
In late August of last year, the German government successfully arranged its first deportation flight to Afghanistan since the Taliban’s permanent takeover in 2021. On board were 28 convicted criminals who had no right to stay. Since then, there have been no further deportation flights to Afghanistan, despite the Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the former Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (both SPD) repeatedly mentioning the possibility of such flights.
