Germany’s Minister of State for Culture, Wolfram Weimer, has defended Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s decision to scale back arms deliveries to Israel, acknowledging internal criticism while maintaining the government’s overall strong support for the country.
Speaking to the Funke Media Group newspapers, Weimer asserted that the German government and particularly Chancellor Merz, remains Israel’s most steadfast ally within Europe. He characterized the recent adjustment in arms export policy as a legitimate decision that does not detract from that fundamental position.
Weimer highlighted the existence of differing perspectives regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza, noting that such divergence in opinion exists even within Israeli institutions, including the General Staff and intelligence services. He emphasized that an immediate cessation of hostilities is achievable should Hamas release the hostages and agree to the previously negotiated ceasefire.
Regarding potential humanitarian efforts and the possibility of accepting individuals from Gaza in Germany, Weimer expressed a cautious stance. He indicated a belief that regional Arab nations, specifically Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the Gulf States, bear the primary responsibility for addressing the immediate needs of those affected. He noted that these countries are currently engaging constructively in addressing the situation.
