Military Deployed To Guard Against Drones

The German Federal Interior Minister, Alexander Dobrindt, is advocating for enhanced drone defense measures, proposing the potential deployment of the Bundeswehr (German Armed Forces) to assist law enforcement agencies within the country. Dobrindt emphasized the urgent need for clarified legal frameworks to facilitate these operations, stating this would represent a significant advancement in Germany’s security infrastructure.

The proposed changes would allow the Bundeswehr to provide support to the police, particularly in countering drone-related incidents. This initiative aims to bolster the protection of critical infrastructure, civilian populations and large-scale public events.

Recognizing the evolving nature of the threat, Dobrindt highlighted the need for a coordinated national response. He outlined plans to establish a German Drone Competence Center, fostering collaboration between federal and state authorities and the Bundeswehr. The center would pool technical expertise and financial resources to keep pace with advancements in drone technology.

Current testing indicates a degree of success in detecting and intercepting drones, but Dobrindt acknowledged the existence of systems capable of circumventing current defenses, necessitating ongoing technological development.

Furthermore, the Interior Minister announced the commencement of a joint research project focused on drone defense technology, in collaboration with Israel. Specific details regarding the scope and nature of this project remain undisclosed.
