West’s Migration Challenge Comes to the Fore Amid US Unrest
The recent unrest in the United States has brought to the forefront the challenge of migration, a concern that affects the entire Western world, according to Steffen Bilger, the parliamentary chief of staff of the CDU/CSU Bundestag faction.
While expressing relief that such scenes are not seen in Germany, Bilger acknowledged that the issue of migration is a challenge for the entire Western world, not just the United States. He pointed to recent and recurring instances of unrest in France, Belgium and other European countries, emphasizing the need for Germany to take measures to prevent similar scenes from unfolding domestically.
Bilger also criticized the lack of unity among Republicans and Democrats in the United States, describing it as detrimental to the country and the Western world at large. He urged for a more collaborative approach in addressing crucial issues, with a focus on finding joint solutions.
Regarding the emergence of civilian groups, such as the Dutch “Bürgerwehren” which recently patrolled the border with Lower Saxony, Bilger expressed a critical view. He emphasized the trust that Germans have in the federal police to perform their duties and expressed a preference for not seeing alternative solutions in Germany.
