German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier highlighted the significance of language acquisition for the successful integration of migrants, among both children and adults, during a speech in Stadtallendorf on Thursday. He was presenting the Verdienstorden to engaged citizens. Steinmeier emphasized that integration and participation have a long tradition in Stadtallendorf and serve as a strong source of identity and community engagement.
The head of state also touched on the challenges and opportunities of migration. “I know that the municipalities are reaching their limits, which is why it’s good and necessary that the number of new arrivals has significantly decreased” he said. At the same time, he expressed his delight at the solidarity shown by the people of Stadtallendorf in the past years in welcoming refugees.
In the context of the time of National Socialism, the President reminded the audience that it is crucial, especially in times when some start to draw a line, to jointly acknowledge historical responsibility.
