Midyatlý Rejects SPD Chairwoman Role, Prefers Deputy Position

Serpil Midyatlý, the State and Party Group Chairwoman of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) in Schleswig-Holstein, has expressed her desire not to become the party’s national chairwoman. In an interview with the Berlin Playbook Podcast by POLITICO, she stated, “I would like to become the deputy party chairwoman again and strengthen the team in the presidency.” Midyatlý emphasized the importance of having a left-wing woman in the position.

Bärbel Bas, another prominent SPD member, is seen as a potential candidate by Midyatlý. She described Bas as a “strong personality and a strong woman” and expressed great respect for her, stating that they work together very well. Midyatlý also showed respect for the decision of Saskia Esken, the current SPD chairwoman and praised her achievements. She mentioned that they have had successes together, which ultimately led to the election victory of Olaf Scholz.
