European Parliament’s Committee Chair, Anton Hofreiter, warns Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg against extending planned moderation relaxations on platforms like Facebook and Instagram to Europe.
“What Mark Zuckerberg proclaims in the US doesn’t apply to Europe for a long time yet” said the Green Party politician to the Funke Media Group’s Thursday editions. “Here, there’s the Digital Services Act, which protects against hate and disinformation in the internet and thus ensures freedom of opinion.”
Hofreiter demanded that the EU make platforms like Meta, Instagram, or X legally accountable for criminally relevant content. “As long as Zuckerberg earns money with content on his platform, he must also be personally liable for these contents” said the Green Party politician.
Zuckerberg had previously announced that he would initially discontinue cooperation with fact-checkers in the US and instead set up a “Community Notes” system.
