Merz's Ukraine Diplomacy Wins SPD Praise

A leading figure within Germany’s Social Democratic Party (SPD) has publicly commended Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s approach to the ongoing negotiations surrounding the conflict in Ukraine. Siemtje Möller, Deputy Parliamentary Group Leader of the SPD, stated that Merz has proactively worked to unify the European stance on the issue, appearing on the Phoenix television network to deliver her assessment.

Despite the absence of direct European representation at the recent summit between US President Trump and Russian President Putin, Möller indicated signs that a cohesive “European voice” is being heard and acknowledged. She connected this, in part, to a shift in Trump’s public statements, noting a move away from expectations of an immediate “deal” towards framing the encounter as a preparatory discussion for future negotiations.

Möller praised Merz’s leadership in taking the initiative alongside European partners, arguing that it has demonstrably strengthened Europe’s position. She expressed hope that the Alaska summit will create the necessary conditions for “genuine negotiations” to commence, while firmly stating that any potential territorial concessions by Ukraine remain solely within the country’s decision-making power.

The SPD politician emphasized the importance of Europe maintaining a clear focus on its own strategic interests. This, she argued, is particularly crucial when contrasted with what she described as the potentially “erratic” approach to diplomacy being adopted by the US administration. She stressed the need for Europe to remain consistently focused on its core priorities throughout the ongoing diplomatic efforts.
