German Chancellor CDU leader Friedrich Merz expressed his intention to hold a security debate without taboos ahead of his planned meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday evening.
When asked if Germany should be under the French nuclear shield, Merz referred to an offer from the 1960s. “French President Charles de Gaulle already proposed this to Germany in the 1960s” Merz told “Bild” (Wednesday edition). “It is more in the German interest than ever to have this discussion now without taboos.”
Considering the current situation, it is “an urgent necessity” that Germany not only discusses these questions with France, but also with the UK, the CDU chief said. “It is all about a common atomic defense shield for Europe, together with the US.
