Merz Warns of Intensified Sanctions if Russia Rejects 30-Day Ceasefire

According to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), the European Union, the United Kingdom and the United States are in agreement to increase pressure on Russia if President Vladimir Putin is not willing to accept the demand for a 30-day ceasefire. Merz stated in an interview with the “Bild” newspaper that they support Ukraine and are in sync with the American government, including President Donald Trump, calling for a 30-day ceasefire to prepare for peace negotiations. Merz emphasized that the ball is in Putin’s court and that he must respond to this offer.

Regarding the potential consequences if Putin refuses a ceasefire, Merz said that there will be a massive intensification of sanctions and further significant aid for Ukraine, both politically and militarily. He added that they are well-coordinated with European member states, including the UK and the Americans on this issue. When asked if Trump is also willing to provide additional weapons, Merz replied that this is the message they are receiving from Washington. Trump is reportedly losing patience with Putin, as the Americans initially aimed to end the war within a few days, but this has not been successful due to Putin’s refusal to engage in talks.

Merz emphasized that the immediate goal is to achieve a ceasefire this weekend. He also mentioned that the most important aspect is to ensure Ukraine’s continued existence as a state, restore its territorial integrity and recognize Ukraine as a self-sufficient and democratic state. He stated that they are at the very beginning of any potential negotiations and emphasized that he does not want to preempt others.
