German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has emphasized the importance of strengthening ties between the European Union and Switzerland

Speaking after a meeting with Swiss Federal President Karin Keller-Sutter at the Chancellery on Tuesday, Merz described relations between Germany and Switzerland as “excellent” He further voiced support for expanding the relationship between Switzerland and the EU, noting that agreements regarding the modernization and expansion of these connections have been finalized

“We now want to implement them swiftly” the Chancellor stated, adding that their potential implementation would enhance the competitiveness and resilience of both nations He underscored the increasing need for such collaboration, citing ongoing pressures on the global trading system

“The world trade order is under constant stress” Merz explained “Therefore, it is beneficial when bilateral relationships remain stable, characterized by a shared spirit of free trade, open borders and positive mutual relations”
