Merz Faces Pressure to Send Ukraine Taurus Missile System

There is growing demand for the new government led by Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to provide Ukraine with the Taurus missile system. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), the head of the defense committee in the European Parliament, told the “Rheinische Post” (Saturday edition), “I expect the new Federal Chancellor to not hide behind formula compromises but to take on the leadership responsibility in Europe that our partners have long been waiting for, which was missed by his predecessor.”

Strack-Zimmermann added, “This includes the rapid and adequate delivery of military equipment, including modern weapon systems like Taurus, alongside humanitarian and economic aid.”

Top diplomat and former head of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, also called for the Taurus missile system’s delivery, but believes the new government is on the right track in Ukraine policy. “The new federal government has set the right signals. It wants to continue supporting Ukraine and it leaves no doubts as to who the perpetrators and victims are in this terrible conflict” said Heusgen in an interview with the “Rheinische Post.”

Heusgen further stated, “It is also correct to approach this matter jointly with close cooperation with France, Poland and the United Kingdom. The crucial thing then is of course the result: Europeans must show unity and strength, such as the decision announced by Federal Chancellor Merz to jointly deliver guidance systems to Ukraine with partners.
