German Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the CDU is considering attending the Women’s European Championship final in Basel on Sunday, should the German national team qualify.
Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius confirmed the potential attendance during a press briefing in Berlin on Monday, responding to queries from the dts Nachrichtenagentur. He explained that the Chancellor’s prior commitments, including a visit from the French President, prevented his presence at Wednesday’s semi-final match.
“Should the national women’s team reach the final, the Chancellor intends to be present” Kornelius stated. He emphasized that while the Chancellor would make every effort to facilitate the team’s advancement, the outcome ultimately rests with the players.
