Following recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza that resulted in the deaths of several journalists, Chancellor Friedrich Merz has affirmed his decision to restrict arms deliveries to Israel.
Speaking at the Chancellery on Tuesday, Merz stated, “The massive attacks by the Israeli army against the city of Gaza have had consequences we have witnessed in recent hours”. While noting he does not believe the strikes were intentionally targeted at journalists, he emphasized that the Israeli army and government must conduct a thorough investigation, as previously announced. “I would like to await the results of that investigation before issuing a final judgment.
He added that the current events are a direct consequence of actions taken by both the Israeli army in recent days and the Israeli government nearly two weeks ago. Merz expressed concern that similar incidents may become more frequent as the Israeli army continues operations in Gaza. “Therefore, I feel more than confirmed in my assessment and in my decision that Israel will not receive weapons from Germany that can be used under these conditions in the Gaza Strip.
Merz stated that the actions of the Israeli government and army are unacceptable and the recent events cast a serious shadow over what he acknowledged is, in many respects, justified action against Hamas. He indicated a continued commitment to observing the situation and adjusting policy accordingly.
