Following a failed election for a judge on the German Federal Constitutional Court, Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) has publicly voiced his support for the parliamentary group leader Jens Spahn.
During a Sunday interview with ARD, when questioned about Spahn’s continued suitability for the leadership role, Merz responded definitively, stating “Absolutely yes”. He emphasized that it is not possible to issue directives to individual members of parliament, acknowledging that for some Union parliamentarians, the rejection of constitutional law expert Frauke Brosius-Gersdorf – the SPD’s nominee – represented a matter of conscience.
Chancellor Merz reflected on the events, suggesting that all parties involved were likely overwhelmed by the situation. He characterized the outcome as something that wasn’t initially anticipated, while also admitting that concerns had previously surfaced within the Union parliamentary group regarding the nomination. He indicated similar reservations existed within the SPD, citing, as an example, former Health Minister Ulla Schmidt.
Merz pledged that a similar situation would not occur again and announced that he intends to discuss future procedures with the SPD in a calm and considered manner. He clarified that there is no rush to resolve the matter.
