Merz and Netanyahu Discuss Key Issues

Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) engaged in a telephone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, focusing on the evolving situation in Gaza, a government spokesperson, Stefan Kornelius, confirmed.

During the discussion, Chancellor Merz strongly endorsed the normalization plan initially proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. Nearly two years following the October 7, 2023, terrorist attack, the spokesperson stated, this plan represents the most viable pathway toward the release of hostages and a resolution for Gaza.

Kornelius also noted that Chancellor Merz welcomed Israel’s public backing of the plan and expressed approval of the announced withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, describing it as “a positive step”. He emphasized the urgency of ongoing negotiations in Egypt, stressing the need for a swift agreement encompassing a cessation of hostilities, the immediate release of hostages, unrestricted humanitarian access and Hamas’ disarmament.

The German government continues to actively participate in diplomatic efforts, maintaining contact with partners in the Middle East and collaborating with the United States. According to the spokesperson, Chancellor Merz conveyed to Prime Minister Netanyahu that Germany intends to be actively involved in the implementation of the plan.

Standard protocol prevented the spokesperson from disclosing details regarding Prime Minister Netanyahu’s remarks during the conversation.
