Merkz's Magic: CDU Surges Ahead as AfD Falters

A recent survey by the polling institute Insa, commissioned by the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, has revealed a widening gap in public approval between the Union and the Alternative for Germany (AfD) parties. The CDU/CSU alliance has gained one percentage point, now standing at 27 percent, while the AfD has lost a point, with 23 percent of the respondents expressing support.

The Social Democratic Party (SPD) has also suffered a slight loss, now holding 16 percent of the vote, while the Left Party has seen a decline of one percentage point, with 10 percent of the respondents in favor. The Greens have made a one-point gain, now at 11 percent and are once again ahead of the Left Party. The Free Democratic Party (FDP) and the Bavarian Socialist Workers’ Party (BSW) each hold four percent of the vote.

The survey also shows an increase in satisfaction with the work of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with 36 percent of respondents now expressing approval, a 13-point gain from the start of his tenure. Conversely, 45 percent of respondents are dissatisfied, a four-point decline and 19 percent are unsure, a nine-point decrease. The overall assessment of the federal government’s work has also become more positive, with 37 percent of respondents now expressing satisfaction, an eight-point gain, while 45 percent remain dissatisfied, a one-point decline and 18 percent are unsure, a seven-point decrease.
